Review written by Jonathan Weichsel, MoreHorror.com
If horror film festivals are any indicator, it seems that the slasher movie is poised for a huge comeback. Everywhere I look I see cool, innovative slasher movies that borrow from films of the past to create something that feels fresh and contemporary. One of the coolest and most innovative slasher movies I have seen recently is Pinup Dolls on Ice.
Pinup Dolls on Ice, which follows a retro burlesque troupe performing in a remote location as they are killed off one by one by a necrophiliac who has a weird obsession with ice, doesn’t have much of a plot. But to complain about that would be missing the point. This is a film full of beautiful women dying in glamorous and not so glamorous ways. The kills are clever and feature the kind of over the top gore that we all crave when we watch a horror movie. There is a lot of nudity from the beautiful actresses. The movie is fast paced and packed with action. The comic relief works well. What more could one ask for in a slasher?
Pinup Dolls on Ice is a gorgeous looking film. The camerawork is dark but crisp, giving the film an icy look that is very appropriate given its theme. The women are beautiful and the DP clearly knows how to photograph them. They are also terrific actresses and run, scream, and cower in fear in a way that is convincing and fun to watch. Parts of Pinup Dolls on Ice are truly terrifying, and there is one kill in particular that actually had an emotional effect on me, which is rare given how jaded I am. The final act, with all of the ice and necrophilia, is truly creepy.
PINUP DOLLS ON ICE is the perfect party movie to watch with a group of friends, but it’s full of enough sick and twisted set pieces that I can totally see myself watching it all alone in a dark room. If you like watching hot women die, and who doesn’t, then check this one out immediately.
